Questions, Concerns and Solutions
Going on Vacation:
Q: We are going on vacation and I am afraid my caterpillars will arrive while we are gone. What can be done?
A: Please call us at least 2-3 weeks in advance and let us know when you will be out of town. We will be glad to coordinate the delivery of your ants.

General Caterpillar Questions:
Q: Do the caterpillars have enough air?
A: Yes. The holes in the lid of the mailing container provide plenty of air for your caterpillars.
Q: My caterpillars are not moving. Are they dead? Do you replace them?
A: It could take as long as one week before they start to move. Wait one week and tilt the container, if the caterpillars roll around they are probably dead. Contact us for replacements.
Q: Can I catch my own caterpillar for the habitat?
A: You can; however we do not recommend it. Your caterpillar might turn into a moth. Moreover, if you catch your own caterpillar you would need to provide the appropriate host plant.
Q: What are the little green balls I see inside the container?
A: This is the caterpillar's "frass" or waste.
Q: What is the webbing I see in the container?
A: The silk webbing is a protection and a transport system for the caterpillars.

General Chrysalis Questions:
Q: What do I do after the chrysalides have formed?
A: Carefully tape the paper disk, with the chrysalides attached, onto the paper scene inside the rear of the habitat. After you attach the disk, the chrysalides will be hanging down.
Q: What should I do if a chrysalis falls off?
A: Gently pick up the chrysalis and place it on the floor of the habitat.
Q: Why are the chrysalides shaking?
A: This is a natural instinct to ward off predators.

General Butterfly Questions:
Q: How long will my butterflies live?
A: Their normal life span is 2 to 4 weeks. We recommend releasing them to the outdoors, (weather permitting) after observing them for a few days.

Metamorphosis:

A: Approximately two to three weeks: 7 to 10 days as caterpillars and 7 to 10 days as chrysalides.
